Carlsbad, CA (AHN) - Maria Sharapova ended her season-long title draught on Sunday after knocking off Patty Schnyder at the Acura Classic tournament, giving the Russian her first tourney victory in 10 months.
The world's No. 2 ranked player, who was a finalist at this year's Australian Open and a semifinalist at the French Open, downed Schnyder 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 to claim her first win since October when she won at Linz, Austria. She successfully defended her title at the Acura Classic thanks to her excellent return game.
"It's always good to win a title," Sharapova told AP. "But to actually come back the year after and back it up is good."
Sharapova was overpowering in the first set, but Schnyder showed life in the second as she broke the Russian twice and took the set.
In the third, it was all Sharapova, as she scorched the No. 11 seed 6-0 while breaking twice.
"The beginning of the third she tried to be more aggressive," Schnyder said. "The first break I got, she hit three returns on the line, two on the baseline that were impossible to handle. She went for those shots and she got it. She really deserved to win."
Schnyder went just 2-for-10 in break chances as she had trouble handling Sharapova's service. Sharapova went 6-for-10 against Schnyder.
Sharapova has now won 16 titles in her career which brought her $181,980. She is now 6-1 lifetime against Schnyder.
Schyder is still searching for her first win since July 2005.
