New Haven, CT (AHN) - Svetlana Kuznetsova finally broke her tournament winless streak this season as she won the Pilot Pen Championship on Saturday.
The tournament's top seed won the event in a rather anti-climatic fashion as she was named the winner after her opponent Agnes Szavay retired in their championship match because of a back injury.
At the time she retired, Szavay was leading the match 6-4, 0-3.
Despite not being able to finish the match and pull out the victory in the more conventional fashion, the Russian-born Kuznetsova took pride in her win which was her first of this year.
"Finally, it feels good," she said. "I was playing some good tennis the past weeks when I made it to the final, but then I couldn't make it to the final."
Szavay, who had to qualify for the event, would have loved to finish the championship match but her back pain was excruciating. The fact she was playing in her eighth match in nine days only added to her troubles.
Szavay won the first set decisively but her back started bothering her most in the second set. After she lost the set's first three games, she decided she could not play on anymore.
Kuznetsova won $88,265 in winning the tournament.
