Wimbledon, England (AHN) - In the biggest upset of the tennis season to date, the world's No. 1 ranked player, Justine Henin, failed in her attempt to complete the career grand slam after she was defeated in the semifinals at Wimbledon by No. 18 seed Marion Bartoli.
Bartoli, a 22-year-old Frenchwoman who had never previously made it out of the third round at Wimbledon, advanced to the finals after downing Henin 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Bartoli broke Henin six times and took advantage of the Belgian's 30 unforced errors.
Henin held a comfortable 37-27 edge in winners, but could only convert 5-of-11 break opportunities.
The top seed in Wimbledon has won six majors including four straight French Open titles, however, she has only reached the finals at the All England Club twice, 2001 and 2006, and she was downed both times.
Henin took the first set in just 22 minutes, but Bartoli fought back in the second, staving off two break points at 5-5 before reeling off seven straight games to stun the top seed.
Henin had only dropped one set in her four previous matches leading up to Friday's loss. She went three sets in her match against Serena Williams in the quarterfinals.
Bartoli will meet Venus Williams in the final, the No. 31 seed, who is heading to her sixth career Wimbledon final after defeating No. 6 Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 6-4 on Friday.
With the No. 31 ranking, Williams is the lowest ranked player to reach the final at Wimbledon since the rankings were implemented in 1975.
Williams limited herself to 11 unforced errors and connected for 15 winners while delivering four breaks of Ivanovic's serve in 16 opportunities.
Ivanovic only managed to break Williams once.
"I was playing well in the first set and I didn't give her any chances," said Williams. "In the second, there were one or two games when I didn't play as well as I wanted to."
Williams will be seeking her fourth Wimbledon title on Saturday when she matches up against Bartoli in the final.
