Wimbledon, England (AHN) - Venus Williams may have appeared to be slightly off her game while winning her first three matches, including an incredible comeback win over Akiko Morigami in her last match, but Williams quickly and decisively made her uneven play a thing of the past on Wednesday by routing 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova in their fourth-round matchup, 6-1, 6-3.
Ironically, Williams had to overcome some more inconsistent play even though the score suggests a total cakewalk over the suddenly beatable Sharapova.
Williams overcame seven wasted break points against Sharapova in the third game of the second set, to break the Russian star in the seventh and ninth games of the set to finish off Sharapova and advance to the quarterfinal round.
Williams converted four of her 19 break points in the match while Sharapova never pushed Williams to a single break point.
Williams will play 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the next round.
