Wimbledon, England (AHN) - There will be a new women's champion at Wimbledon in 2007 after the defending champion, Amelie Mauresmo, was upset on Tuesday in the fourth round.
Nicole Vaidisova, the No. 14 seed the Czech Republic, knocked off the two-time grand slam winner, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. It is the second straight Grand Slam that Vaidisova has ousted Mauresmo in the fourth round. In the French Open, she topped Mauresmo 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Vaidisova, 18, had Mauresmo so frustrated in the third set that she slammed a ball high in the stands before finishing the match. Vaidisova advances to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the first time in her career. Her previous best showing was in 2006 when she reached the fourth round. Her best finish in a major came this year at the Australian Open and last season at French OPen.
The Czech native battled the Frenchwoman in the first set before gaining a set advantage with an 8-6 win in the tiebreak. Mauresmo came back to win the second set 6-4. But Vaidisova blew past her in the deciding set, allowing Mauremso to win just one game.
Mauresmo lost despite going 4-for-6 in break point chances and slamming 13 aces. She didn't help her cause by double-faulting 14 times and hitting 37 unforced errors.
Vaidisova broke Mauresmo five times and connected for 38 winners.
Vaidisova will look to get into the semifinals once again when she faces the winner of the match between No. 6 Ana Ivanovic and No. 11 Nadia Petrova in the quarterfinals.
