Rodionova Becomes Second WTA Player Disqualified In 36-Year History

Mason, Ohio (AHN) - If you attend a women's tennis match and cheer for Anastasia Rodionova's opponent - beware of identified flying objects - namely small green tennis balls.

Rodionova became just the second player on the WTA Tour to be disqualified from a match Tuesday night at the Cincinnati Women's Open when she tired of some fans cheering for her opponent Angelique Kerber, and decided to send a message their way in the form of a quick forehand that, fortunately, did no harm anyone but Rodionova.

Kerber was given a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 victory after Rodionova hit the ball towards a trio of fans who were cheering for Kerber.

Apparently frustrated after losing the first game of the final set, Rodionova's wayward ball hit the wall in front of the stands where the fans were seated before bouncing back onto the court.

Rodionova had complained earlier in the match about fans applauding for Kerber during points.

While the players were changing sides following the first game in the third set, the chair umpire called for tournament referee William Coffey and Coffey surprisingly defaulted Rodionova for "unsportsmanlike conduct," he said.

"I'm shocked," Rodionova told reporters after the match. "I still don't understand why they defaulted me. I'm really upset. I've never seen in my life anyone defaulted in this situation. I had no warning. I didn't hit the ball at anybody. I didn't swear at anybody. I didn't throw my racket."

A WTA Tour spokesman said that there has been only one other default in the main draw of a tournament in the 36-year history of the tour.

Irina Spirlea was disqualified in 1996 at Palermo for using a John McEnroe-like profanity-laced outburst toward an official.

In other Cincinnati Women's Open news, top-seeded Anna Chakvetadze and No. 2 seed Patty Schnyder advanced to the second round after a 53-minute rain delay prior to the start of the evening matches.

Chakvetadze lost four consecutive games to start the match before pounding Tatiana Poutchek 6-4, 6-0.

Schnyder won the final four games of her match to take a 6-2, 7-5 win over Monique Adamczak.

"I was scared," said Chakvetadze, ranked No. 8 in the world. "I just didn't feel like I was ready to play. I felt like I was sleeping on the court the first few games."

Fifth-seeded Aiko Nakamura was upset by 17-year-old qualifier Anna Tatishvili 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) and veteran Jill Craybas routed Alexa Glatch 6-2, 6-4.

Qualifiers, Anda Perianu eliminated Melinda Czink 6-3, 6-2, and Brenda Schultz-McCarthy defeated Catalina Castano 6-2, 6-4.

Bethanie Mattek beat Iryna Kuryanovich 6-1, 6-3, Varvara Lepchenko, beat Kirsten Flower 6-2, 6-2 while Akgul Amanmuradova tamed Connie Hsu 6-1, 6-3 and Olga Govortsova beat Alina Jidkova 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
