Stowe, VT (AHN) - Nothing could stop Russia from moving on.
Despite having two of its players sidelined with injuries, Russia eliminated Venus Williams and the United States 3-2 on Sunday to advance to the final of the Fed Cup.
Williams gave the Americans a chance with her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Anna Chakvetadze, which gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead.
However, Nadia Petrova and Elena Vesnina completed the victory for Russia, which made use of its depth to overcome the Americans.
"Their depth is very strong, that's the difference," U.S. captain Zina Garrison said. "They can go to almost anyone."
Petrova downed Fed Cup first-timer Meilen Tu, 6-1, 6-2 to even the series 2-2 before Petrova and Vesnina won the semifinal doubles match over Williams and Lisa Raymond, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).
The Americans were up 4-3 in the second set, but three deuces by the Russians tied the match. After Petrova double-faulted in the tiebreaker, Russians swept the next seven points en route to the win.
Russia, which is looking for its third title in four years, will face Italy for the championship. The U.S. hasn't advanced to the final since winning the Cup in 2000.
Serena Williams' absence from the tournament hurt the Americans' chances. Williams sat out due to a hand injury.
