French Open Women's Update: Henin Ousts Williams, Jankovic, Sharapova, Ivanovic Advance To Semis

Tue Jun 05 11:00:02 +0200 2007

Paris, France (AHN) - And then there were none. Every American player is now finished at the 2007 French Open following Serena Williams' 6-4, 6-3 loss to three-time Roland Garros champion Justine Henin on Tuesday.

Henin will face Jelena Jankovic, who knocked Williams' sister, Venus, out of the tournament. Jankovic downed Nicole Vaidisova 6-3, 7-5 on Tuesday.

Henin jumped all over Williams from the start and took advantage of a slew of unforced errors by the lone American left on both the men's and women's sides.

Despite Henin's dominant straight sets win, Williams balked at giving her opponent props for the win.

"Nothing worked today. Sometimes you just have days like that," Williams said. "All she had to do was show up."

World No. 2 Maria Sharapova also advanced to the semifinals of the French Open for the first time by beating fellow 20-year-old Russian Anna Chakvetadze, 6-3, 6-4.

Sharapova, who enjoys playing on faster surfaces, overcame her sore shoulder and a surface she said she feels like a "cow on ice" on to beat Chakvetadze. She will face Serbia's Ana Ivanovic next.

Ivanovic of Serbia soundly thumped No. 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.
