Wimbledon, England (AHN) - Rain proved to be the big winner on Day 6 of Wimbledon as only two matches of the many scheduled in both the men's and women's draws of the Grand Slam tournament were completed.

Maria Sharapova and Amelie Mauresmo were the only players to advance into the next round with their victories in third round matches on Saturday.

The second-ranked Sharapova defeated No. 26 Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-3 and No. 4 Mauresmo routed No. 28 Mara Santangelo 6-1, 6-2.

Sharapova's win over her opponent came just in time before the clouds opened up with a drenching rain that caused seven singles matches in play to be suspended.

Wimbledon officials later canceled those matches, along with seven others that did not start before the bad weather came. All of the contests will be finished on Monday as Sunday is a normal day off for the most prestigious of the four Grand Slam events.

Sharapova said the weather was in the back of her mind during her entire match against Sugiyama.

"It's just a weird situation, because you know the rain is coming," she said. "You're just thinking you might be a match point up and you have to go and wait to finish the match. It's a little bit of a tense moment."

The extra drama hardly messed up the No. 2 seed's game, however, as Sharapova had little difficulty against her opponent. The only time the Russian looked shaky was when she lost the first two games in the second set.

She won four of the next five games to take control of the match though.

Mauresmo's match was also drama-free as the French woman committed few errors. The No. 4 seed had 11 aces and only nine unforced errors in her easy win over Santangelo.

The simple victory was evident in the fact the defending Wimbledon champion needed only 57 minutes to win her match.

Mauresmo also addressed the weather in her post-match comments. She talked of how hard it can be when the weather delays matches.

"You're not completely relaxed," she said. "You still have to be ready to go on. And I thought I did that pretty well today."
