Paris, France (AHN) - It's down to the final eight in the women's singles draw at the second Grand Slam of the year, and several big names are still alive.
Maria Sharapova survived two match points before finally outlasting Patty Schnyder 3-6, 6-4, 9-7. Schnyder needed just one point to end the match on two different occasions in the final set, the first coming with a 5-4 lead and the second coming with a 7-6 lead, but she couldn't capitalize.
Sharapova kept battling and eventually pulled out the win by breaking Schnyder to end the match, when her forehand sailed wide. It was the first match point for Sharapova, and she seized the opportunity to advance to the next round.
She will face ninth-seeded Anna Chakvetadze, who needed three sets to beat No. 25 Lucie Safarova 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
The most intriguing quarterfinal match will be between Serena Williams, who defeated tenth seeded Dinara Safina 6-2, 6-3. Williams won 12 of the last 14 points of the match after the two were tied at 3-3 in the second set.
Henin had little trouble with Sybille Bammer, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Williams holds a 6-3 career advantage over Henin, but all three of the losses have come on clay, which just happens to be the surface at famed Roland Garros.
Also moving through to the quarterfinals was third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, who won 6-4, 6-3 over Shahar Peer and sixth-seeded Nicole Vaidisova, who beat Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 6-1.
Rounding out the fourth round, Jelena Jankovic breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marion Bartoli, and Ana Ivanovic beat Anabel Medina 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
