Wimbledon, England (AHN) - Defending champ Amelie Mauresmo routed her opponent on Day Four of Wimbledon to advance to the third round.
The French woman was one of many of the top seeds in the women's draw to win their matches. No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova and American Venus Williams were among the other victorious women on Thursday.
Mauresmo, who is ranked No. 4 at the Grand Slam event because of injuries this year including one that required an appendectomy in March, had no trouble with Yvonne Meusberger as she gave up only three games in their match.
The 2006 Wimbledon champ won 6-1, 6-2.
Another former champ, Venus Williams, also had an easy second round match as the three-time winner defeated Hana Sromova 6-2, 6-2.
The easy win for the No. 23 seed this year was a welcome turn for Williams as the American struggled in the first round as she needed three sets to defeat Alla Kudryavtesa.
Maria Sharapova who won at the All-England Club in 2004 advanced into the third round with a win over Severine Bremond 6-0, 6-3.
Other ranked winners on Thursday were No. 5 Svetlana Kuznetsova who beat Bethanie Mattek 7-6, 6-4, No. 6 Ana Ivanovic who defeated Meilen Tu 6-4, 6-3, and No. 8 Anna Chakvetadze who routed Tatiana Poutchek 6-2, 6-1.
