Ready For Wimbledon: Henin Defeats Mauresmo In Grass-Court Tuneup

Eastbourne, England (AHN) - Justine Henin became the woman to beat at Wimbledon as the Belgian beat Amelie Mauresmo 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 to win the Eastbourne International tournament on Saturday.

The event is the last grass court tuneup before tennis' most well-known Grand Slam tournament begins on Monday.

Henin's victory at Eastbourne is the latest in what is turning out to be a great year for the tennis player. She has now won five tournaments this year and has a 33-3 record. Her 92 percent match winning mark is the best of her nine-year career.

Saturday's match between the two ladies was a near classic as strong winds caused both Henin and Mauresmo to change up their games. The breezy conditions had an especially strong effect on their serving games.

"The serve let me down a bit," Mauresmo said after the match ended. "Not enough first serves in, definitely, and a few volleys here and there that I had the occasion to put away and I didn't."

The last half of the first set was especially troublesome for the French woman as Mauresmo blew a 3-1 lead. Henin broke her opponent three times thereafter and then closed out the set with an ace on her serving game.

The second set featured both players playing well enough to set up a tiebreaker which Mauresmo dominated. She won six of its first seven points and then took the set when she made good on her fourth set point.

Henin looked like she might lose the match in the final set as she fell down 4-5 but the Belgian broke Mauresmo yet again. The two ladies each one a game next and Henin finally took over matters in the ensuing tiebreaker as she only dropped two points to her opponent.

The victory was the second Eastbourne title in a row for Henin.

"It's another title for me and gives confidence," Henin said. "Amelie is one of the best players on grass and she proved it last year in Wimbledon."

Mauresmo beat Henin in last year's Wimbledon final but it looks like her work will be cut out for her to win the Grand Slam event because the Belgian is currently playing the best tennis on the women's tour.
