Paris, Italy (AHN) - Two-time Grand Slam champion Amelie Mauresmo saw her bid for a French Open championship come to an end after she was stunned by Lucie Safarova, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in third-round action Saturday.
Mauresmo, who is seeded fifth, had a 3-0 lead in each set, but faltered in both. She double-faulted eight times and fell behind 2-0 in the tiebreaker before finally losing when Safarova's backhand serve went into the net.
It marks the second time Safarova has defeated Mauresmo. The two squared off at Melbourne in January.
Mauresmo received treatment in the middle of the first set. After a several minutes, she returned with her right thigh wrapped.
Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova advanced to the fourth round with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Alla Kudryavtseva .
Sharapova was broken three straight times in the second set before rallying to win.
"I was making a lot of unforced errors," Sharapova said. "Not a lot of people are going to let me get away with that. It's a good reminder for the future not to let that happen again."
Sharapova will meet No. 14 Patty Schnyder in the fourth round. Schnyder advanced 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 triumph over Karin Knapp.
In other action, third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-3 and No. 7 Ana Ivanovic downed Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-2, 6-0.
