Paris, France (AHN) - American tennis took another hit on Friday when one of its superstars was bounced from Roland Garros.

After watching all nine American men get knocked out in the first round, the women's side took its first significant American casualty when Venus Williams was ousted in third round action.

No. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic knocked out the 2002 French Open finalist 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

This is the second time that Jankovic has knocked Williams out of a major in the last year. Jankovic also eliminated Williams in last year's Wimbledon during third-round action.

Williams shot herself in the foot the entire match, committing 52 unforced errors and three double faults. While Jankovic got her first serve in 81 percent of the time, Williams struggled to 51 percent efficiency. Jankovic broke her serve six times, while Williams only managed three breaks off of the 22-year-old Serbian.

"I got a little bit tired at the end," Williams said. "It's tough on clay."

"The third set went a little bit faster than what I expected," Williams said. "I felt a little bit slow ... I couldn't get my feet where I wanted them."

Jankovic will advance to play the winner of the match between Marion Bartoli and Elena Dementieva in third round action on Friday.

Serena Williams is now America's last hope on both the men's and women's sides. Serena will face Michaella Krajicek in the third round.

If she wins her next two matches, she could face No. 1 seed Justine Henin in the semifinals.

In other third round action on Friday, Tathiana Garbin posted a straight sets 6-3, 6-0 win over Stephanie Cohen-Aloro. She will advance to play the winner of the Samantha Stosur/Nicole Vaidisova match. Vaidisova is the No. 6 seed at Roland Garros.
