Paris, France (AHN) - The big names in the women's draw at the French Open all recorded second round wins on Wednesday.
American Venus Williams struck the fastest recorded serve in a main-draw match en rout to a straight set 6-1, 7-6 (8) win over Ashley Harkleroad.
Top-seeded Justine Henin breezed into the third round with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Tamira Paszek.
Fifth seeded Amelie Mauresmo won in straight sets over Laura Granville 6-0, 7-5, and Maria Sharapova, still feeling the effects of an injured shoulder, struggled before finally outlasting Emilie Loit 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a match she trailed 6-5 in the second set.
"My shoulder is not where I want it to be," Sharapova said after the match. "It's still not perfect. At times I still feel it."
2004 French Open champion Anastasia Myskina wasn't quite as fortunate. Meghan Shaughnessy blitzed the Russian 6-1, 6-0.
Williams will now face fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic in the third round, who bested Catalina Castano 6-3, 6-3.
Serena Williams' match against Milagros Sequera was postponed because of the weather.
Third seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova also advanced to the next round with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Ekaterina Bychkova.
Other seeded players advancing to the third round: No. 7 Ana Ivanovic, No. 9 Anna Chakvetadze, No. 10 Dinara Safina, No. 12 Daniela Hantuchova, No. 13 Elena Dementieva, No. 14 Patty Schnyder, No. 15 Shahar Peer, No. 17 Katarina Srebotnik, No. 20 Sybille Bammer, No. 21 Ay Sugiyama, No. 22 Alona Bondarenko, No. 24 Anabel Medina Garrigues, No. 25 Lucie Safarova, and No. 28 Mara Santangelo.
