Paris, France (AHN) - Maria Sharapova isn't 100 percent healthy. That isn't stopping her from doing her job.
The world's second-ranked player defeated Emilie Loit 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a first-round French Open match Wednesday.
Sharapova, who is playing with a shoulder injury, lost seven break points in the first game of the match but took advantage of both opportunities in the fifth and sixth games
"My shoulder is still not where I want it to be. It's still not perfect," Sharapova said to reporters. "I don't think I've had a more serious injury."
Sharapova is coming off a disappointing finish in Istanbul when she was knocked out in the semifinals of the clay-court tune-up for the second major on the WTA's schedule.
She missed nearly two months with the shoulder injury before returning at Istanbul.
In other action, third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova downed Ekaterina Bychkova of Russia 6-0, 6-3 and Meghann Shaughnessy routed 2004 French Open champion Anastasia Myskina.
Myskina is still recovering from foot surgery.
"I have to be a realist. I knew I was not going to win but I just wanted to see how my foot would feel," Myskina said. "You can see I'm moving like a big cow now."
The victory was extra satisfying for Shaughnessy, who has lost in the first round at the French Open the last two years.
Seventh-seeded, Ana Ivanovic, No. 9 Anna Chakvetadze, 12-seeded Daniela Hantuchova, No. 13 Elena Dementieva, 14th-seeded Patty Schnyder, No. 15 Shahar Peer, 17th-seeded Katarina Srebotnik, No. 21 Ai Sugiyama, 22nd-seeded Alona Bondarenko, No. 24 Anabel Medina Garrigues and 25-seeded Lucie Safarova all earned first-round wins.
Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo and sisters Venus and Serena Williams will return for second round matches later on Wednesday.
