Paris, France (AHN) - The French Open finally got some decent weather on Wednesday as Day 3 of the Grand Slam tournament saw 22 matches in the women's draw reach their completions, including eight involving seeded players.

The highest seeds to advance to the second round were fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic, who beat Stephanie Foretz in straight sets, and No. 6 Nicole Vaidisova, who defeated Emmanuelle Gagliardi. The lone upset of the day came when Kveta Peschke upended 11th seed Nadia Petrova.

The two highest seeds to play on Wednesday both had relatively easy times in their matches. Jankovic beat Foretz 6-2, 6-2, just four days after she withdrew from a warm up event because of gastroenteritis.

Vaidisova also came into this week's prestigious event ailing from a wrist injury that caused her to pull out of her last three scheduled tournaments. The wrist did not seem to bother the Czech on Wednesday after her 6-4, 6-3 Gagliardi.

After their matches, both ladies said they were in fine health.

"For the past week and a half, I've been pain-free but of course, I'm lacking some matches," Vaidisova told AP.

Petrova failed to advance to the second round by falling apart in the third set of her match against Peschke. The two traded the first two sets with 7-5 scores but Petrova was shut out in the deciding set.

In the other matches among seeded players, No. 13 Elena Dementieva beat Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-2; No. 18 Marion Bartoli upended Aravane Rezai 6-2, 6-4; No. 20 Sybille Bammer defeated Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-4; No. 23 Francesca Schiavone beat Yvonne Meusburger 6-2, 6-4; and No. 28 Mara Santangelo defeated Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 6-4.

The first round matches are not all complete. Some of the tournament favorites, including Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Amelie Mauresmo are scheduled to compete on Wednesday.
