Paris, France (AHN) - Nadia Petrova rallied from a set down to defeat Lucie Safarova 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday for the Gaz de France title.
Petrova captured her seventh title, but her first since losing back-to-back tournament finals against Anna Chakvetadze at Moscow and Maria Sharapova at Linz, Austria.
Safarova strong-armed serve bounced out of bounds, securing Petrova the victory.
Safarova won the first set and took a 40-0 lead in the second before Petrova made her comeback by breaking serve three times in a second set that resulted in nine winners, while Safarova made 13 unforced errors.
"I felt a bit tired and I had a shoulder problem which stopped me from serving as well," Safarova told AP. "I was really hurting."
Safarova continued to struggle in the third sent after a forehand went long. Petrova broke Safarova again after another unforced error.
Petrova led 5-1, but Safarova eventually cut the deficit to 5-4.
While serving for the match, Petrova saved two break points with a net volley and an ace.
"In the last game, I understood that I could do nothing if I stayed on the baseline," Petrova told AP. "I came to the net, and it worked pretty well for me."
The 20-year-old Safarova defeated three top-10 players to make it to the finals, where she was in search of her fourth career title.
"Amazing feeling. Always wanted to win here because I really enjoy coming here," said Petrova. "I love the atmosphere on the court...So it's really a pleasure to be here and I came here first, I came three days earlier, before the tournament and I told myself 'I'm the first to come and the last one to leave' and I was lucky that it came through."
