Sorenstam Disappointed With 16th Place Finish At Women's British Open

St. Andrews, Scotland (AHN) - Sometimes just playing is good enough, or it has to be.

That was the case for Annika Sorenstam, who finished at four-over and in a tie for 16th place at the recent Women's British Open.

Sorenstam, who has won 10 majors, is returning from disc problems in her neck and back that have troubled her throughout the year, and had to be content with playing competitively.

"I'm really disappointed because I think I'm playing very, very well. I'm disappointed with the score,'' Sorenstam told AP after shooting 76 on Sunday. "I'm playing as well as I can. I'm putting as well as I can. It's just not coming together."

Sorenstam, who has three top 10 finishes on the season in nine events, lamented that her play was pretty good, but just not good enough to make a run at a championship she last captured in 2003.

"This is one of those weeks when I am close, but sometimes close is not good enough,'' Sorenstam told AP. "On 18, I end up on the path and you have to play it on the path here. Then I hit my shot to the green and it rolled back down.''

Sorenstam would like to put the week behind her, though she said she was glad to compete even with her recent ailments, that left her at about 85 percent of full-health.

"`It's fun being here on a Sunday having a chance to win,'' she said, adding that the windy conditions on Saturday and the persistent rain on Sunday were equally tough. `"But it's the same for everybody, just a difficult day."

Sorentam's 16th place finish at St. Andrews was her second-best finish at a major this year. Her best showing came at the LPGA Championship where she placed 15th. She struggled at the Kraft Nabisco and U.S. Women's Open where she placed 31st and 32nd.

She has no wins in eight tournaments this year and is 30th on the money list with $309,245.
