St. Andrews, Scotland (AHN) - Thursday represented the first time the Women's British Open field has ever descended upon 'The Old Course' at St. Andrews in Scotland, but the LPGA's No. 1 ranked player Lorena Ochoa looked like she had been playing it for years during the first round.
Ochoa recorded an outstanding round, shooting a 67 for a score of 6-under par to earn a two-stroke lead.
The 25-year-old made three straight birdies on the 8th, 9th and 10th holes and didn't make a bogey all day to cruise to the first-round lead.
Ochoa also birdied the Par 5 fifth hole, the Par 4 15th and the Par 5 17th.
"It was just a really good day, one of those days when things are easy and really good," Ochoa told AP. "There was only a little bit of a breeze and I took advantage of that and made some birdies.
"I had in my head 2 or 3 under so it's even better than I thought."
Louise Friberg finished her round two shots off the lead in second place at 4-under with a 69. She was at 4-under through 12 holes, but she bogeyed the 13th and 17th before recovering by knocking down birdies in two of the last three holes.
Ai Miyazato and Rebecca Hudson each finished in third place, shooting 70s at 3-under, three shots off the lead.
Michelle Wie, the 17-year-old amateur who has struggled recently due to lingering wrist injuries, shot a respectable even-par, 73. Wie was just two shots off the lead, but bogeyed two of her last five holes to fall back to a tie for 20th.
"It was semi-disappointing and semi-successful," said Wie.
"It's the first time I've played really solidly, but I missed some reasonably easy putts. I'm starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel now."
Brittany Lincicome bogeyed three holes, but recovered with three birdies on the back nine to finish at 2-under with a 71. She is currently alone in fifth place.
Updating other players of note who have finished their first rounds: Se Ri Pak is at even after shooting a 73 as is Paula Creamer.
Still in progress: 10-time major winner Annika Sorenstam is even through 12 holes, last year's British Open winner Sherri Steinhauer is at 1-over par through 10 holes and Karrie Webb is 3-over par through 12 holes.
