Evian-Les-Bains, France (AHN) - The final round of the Evian Masters took a dramatic turn as Natalie Gulbis pulled out the victory with a birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff on Sunday, earning her first win on the LPGA Tour.
Her opponent in the playoff, Jang Jeong, needed a birdie on the final hole of regulation play to force the extra session. The two ladies finished at 4-under for the tournament.
Gulbis finished with a final round of 70 while Jeong had a 72.
The two ladies held off several other players who made the Evian Masters one of the most compelling this year on the LPGA tour.
Lorena Ochoa tied for the best round of the day with a 68 to finish tied for third at 3-under. The Mexican marched off with a fantastic front nine as she birdied two of the first three holes and then birdied Nos. 8 and 9.
A bogey on the par-5 18th proved especially costly, however, and ruined her chance at joining the playoff.
Juli Inkster, the third round leader who was vying to become the oldest woman to win a LPGA event at the age of 47, was still in contention until the very end despite her problems.
She shot 75 on Sunday with three bogeys in the last five holes causing her undoing. She also finished at 3-under for the tournament and could have advanced to the playoff with a birdie on the closing hole, but three-puttef for par.
Still, the day belonged to Gulbis.
She had one of the steadiest rounds on Sunday, making birdie on three holes on the front nine before her only stumble of the day, a bogey at 14.
Jang's round was just the opposite. The South Korean struggled on the front nine as she went 3-over par and needed three birdies on the final four holes to force the playoff.
