Evian-Les-Bains, France (AHN) - Poor weather at the third round of the Evian Masters caused many ladies to have headaches on Saturday but it made one woman rather happy.
Juli Inkster shot a 3-under par 69 to take a two stroke lead going into the final round. The 47-year-old's performance was outstanding as she was one of only seven players to shoot under par in the third round.
Jang Jeong was alone in second place after shooting an even par, 72.
Inkster's round featured plenty of steady play which was hard considering the windy conditions and difficult to read greens. She finished with five birdies and two bogeys in her round.
"I played very well," she said. "I'm driving the ball well, I hit good irons and good wedges and I'm putting good."
If Inkster can keep doing what she did on Saturday in Sunday's final round, she will become the oldest player to win an LPGA event. The previous holder of that mark is Joanne Carner who won the Safeco Classic at the age of 46.
Inkster will have to hold off a bunch of competitors to win, however. Besides Jeong, she will have to battle Sophie Gustafson, Shin Ji-yai, and Diana D'Alessio who were tied for third place, three strokes back of the leader.
Annika Sorenstam, who won this event twice, was among three ladies four strokes back.
One person who definitely has no chance of winning the tournament is Michelle Wie. The teenager shot a 12-over, 84 to finish with the worst round of the day.
The horrible performance made her forget about her triumphant round of 71 the day before. That score was the first time Wie shot a round under par this year.
She tried not to let her frustrating round on Saturday get her down too much though.
"That is what happens whey you recover, you have some bad days and you have some good days," she said. "But I'm still going to take some positives out of it and work on it tomorrow."
