Castrale Comes Back From Six Strokes Down To Top Ochoa In First Playoff Hole At Ginn Tribute

Mount Pleasant, S.C. (AHN) - Nicole Castrale beat the odds and Lorena Ochoa on the way to her first LPGA Tour victory on Sunday.

Castrale shot par on the first hole of a playoff Sunday in the Ginn Tribute defeating Ochoa, the top-ranked player in the world. Castrale enjoyed an amazing comeback, as she trailed by six shots with just six holes remaining before her furious finish.

Ochoa fumbled the lead with bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes and added to her woes with a tee shot that landed in the marsh on the 18th. Castrale was steady rather than spectacular in catching Ochoa on the final hole, two-putting from 25 feet on the 18th. She then saw Ochoa miss an 18-footer that would have won the match.

Castrale (69, 71, 68, 71---279) gave herself the chance to win on the previous two holes, going birdie-birdie while Ochoa struggled with both her long and short game.

Castrale closed with a 1-under 71 to match Ochoa (74) at 9-under 279 on the RiverTowne Country Club course, winning $390,000 for her efforts. It was a nice payday for a player who came into the tourney No. 18 on the year in winnings.

Ochoa, who earned $235,268, shot a 74 after a very strong first three days (68, 67, 70).

The tournament was hosted by Annika Sorenstam, who finished in a 36th place tie, shooting a tough 76 on the final day. She is still recovering from a ruptured disk and a bulging disk.

Castrale said staying positive and confident helped her edge Ochoa.

"To beat Lorena, yeah, the odds weren't on my side, for sure," Castrale told AP. "I thought, 'Man, Lorena's playing great,"' Castrale said. "Never did I think I can't catch her. I knew I was playing well too."

Despite being the No. 1 player in the world, Ochoa has struggled in playoffs, going 0-4. Ochoa knows she needs to rack up some pressure wins to become a truly elite player.

"I need to learn to win in the tough ones. For sure I need to improve my playoff percentages," she told AP.
