West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - At least she is now being consistent.
After withdrawing mid-round during the Ginn Tribute a few weeks ago in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina citing an ailing right wrist, Michelle Wie has decided not to play in the upcoming John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour because of lingering effects from the same injury.
She had been granted a sponsor's exemption into the tournament for the third straight year and is still trying to make her first cut on American soil playing against men.
She has seen limited tournament action this season after suffering the injury in January while she was jogging.
She almost made the cut at the John Deere in 2005 when she was just 15. Last year, she withdrew during the second round for what was deemed as heat exhaustion, but was well on her way to missing the cut after shooting an opening round 77.
Wie has come under fire in recent weeks for withdrawing suddenly from the Ginn Tribute on the LPGA Tour several weeks ago when she was in danger of shooting an 88, which would have barred her from playing on the LPGA Tour for one full year.
She was 14-over par through 16 holes in her first tournament back since breaking her wrist in a fall while jogging, and decided to end her round-and tournament- and cited her wrist injury as the primary impetus.
Two days later, she showed up practicing for the LPGA Championship, drawing the ire of several notable players, including Annika Sorenstam.
Wie is planning on playing in next week's U.S. Women's Open, however.
"While my rehabilitation is on schedule, I do not have all of my strength back yet," Wie told AP. "The TPC Deere Run course is obviously very long, and I just don't have the length to play there right now."
Wie has already tested the PGA waters this season, playing in the Sony Open in January in her native Hawaii. She shot 78-76 and missed the cut.
