Mount Pleasant, SC (AHN) - Michelle Wie withdrew from the Ginn Tribute in the first round after re-aggravating a wrist injury that kept her out of action four months.
Wie, 17, showed some serious rust in her first action since January as she finished 14 over par through 16 holes before calling it quits. The 17-year-old told an LPGA official, "We're not going to play anymore."
Wie's performance certainly suffered. She shot a 10 on the par-5 third hole, where one of her shots hit a parked car and trickled down a roadway drain.
"It was actually quite funny," she said. "I was going to crawl down the drain to show people it was in play. But I couldn't fit."
Wie has not played since the missing the cut at the PGA Tour's Sony Open in January. She plans to play the McDonald's LPGA Championship next week, only if she is healthy enough to participate.
"I want to be smart about" the injury, Wie said. "But I definitely want to get back playing, so I'm going to work on it."
Wie sported bandages on her wrist at the event.
She said her decision to retire the clubs on Thursday was solely due to her ailing wrist and not an LPGA rule that states nontour members will be banned for a year if they shoot 88 or higher in an event.
"I had issues with my wrist," she said. "Shooting 88 is not what I think about."
