Corning, NY (AHN) - Young Kim earned the first victory of her brief LPGA career Sunday at the Corning Classic - and showed the world what the love of the game is all about by breaking down in tears of happiness.
While being sprayed with soda from fellow South Koreans Mi Hyun Kim and In-Kyung Kim, Kim was nearly speechless.
"I cannot believe it," said Young Kim, whose breakthrough triumph came in her 103rd start. "I cannot say anything. Too much good."
Kim was clutch down the stretch too - bagging two birdies over her last five holes to overcome back-to-back bogeys just before the turn to record a 4-under 68.
Paula Creamer (71) and Mi Hyun Kim (70), who both finished at -17 under, were second and third respectively.
Kim shot a 20-under 268 for the entire event, just four shots off the tournament record set four years ago by Juli Inkster.
Beth Bader (72), also looking for her first career victory, made double bogey on the final hole to finish in a tie for fourth with rookie In-Kyung Kim (69) at 16-under.
Kim earned $195,000 for her victory, stretching her season winnings to $328,442, just outside the top 10.
Creamer, 20, who was looking for her fourth career victory and second of the season, couldn't close the gap on the leaders down the stretch.
"I tried," said Creamer after struggling with her fairway accuracy in the final round.
"Nothing really clicked. To tie for second and be in contention the way I played to me is good confidence-wise. That was hard. It was a difficult day."
After making just one bogey in the first three rounds, Kim bogeyed No. 8 and 9.
Creamer took a one-shot lead with a birdie at the par-5 12th, but three-putted on the 14th from 45 feet.
"You don't miss laying up," said Creamer, after participating in the Corning Classic for the first time. "That's no good."
Kim ensured her victory on the 17th by nailing her approach shot to within one foot of the cup and sinking the following 'gimme.'
