West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - Michelle Wie will make her professional Canada debut in the Canadian Women's Open Aug. 16-19 at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton.
In 2003, Wie played in a Canadian men's event held in Michigan, but failed to make the cut.
"I'm excited to get out there and play again and especially excited to make my professional debut in Canada," she told AP.
Wie will likely play in three straight LPGA events, beginning with the Canadian Open followed by the Evian Masters and the Women's British Open.
"Michelle's global notoriety will assuredly attract fans of golf and sport alike to the Royal Mayfair," stated Sean Van Kesteren, the Royal Canadian Golf Association's director for women's pro championships. "At events that hosted Michelle, the attendance increased, (television) rankings doubled or tripled. She's an attraction not just for golf fans, but for non-golfers as well."
Wie is permitted to play in six LPGA Tour events when she attends college full-time.
Other names that have committed to the Canadian Open include Karrie Webb and Canada's Laurie Kane and Dawn Coe Jones.
Wie got her major break as a 12-year-old when she qualified for an event in 2002. A year later, she finished ninth in the Kraft Nabisco Open, an LPGA major championship event.
Wie has been out since the Sony Open due to a wrist injury. Her first event back will be the Ginn Tribute in South Carolina on the last week of May.
