Wie's Coach Is Wrong, Young Golfer Could Play In Upcoming John Deere PGA Tournament

West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - When Michelle Wie's coach mistakenly made comments last week that his prized pupil was no longer interested in playing against the males on the PGA Tour, the remarks raised more than a couple of eyebrows as Wie has been known throughout her career for wanting to play against - and beat - her professional male counterparts.

Wie's instructor, David Leadbetter, was quoted by Agency France Presse as saying the 17-year-old Wie "hasn't got any PGA Tour events planned at the moment."

Leadbetter was also quoted at the Wachovia Championship, saying Wie is "going to commit herself to the LPGA" and next year "she'll probably take up membership" on the women's tour.

However, neither Wie nor the William Morris Agency, which represents her, confirmed Leadbetter's erroneous announcement. Jesse Derris of the Ken Sunshine Agency, the family's spokesperson, told Golf World, "It's fair to say no options have been ruled out."

As a matter of fact, Wie could end up playing in the upcoming PGA John Deere Classic from July 12-15.

Though Wie missed the cut at the John Deere by two strokes in 2005 and had to withdraw because of heat exhaustion midway through the second round last year, her appearance helped to draw record crowds for the event in both of her appearance, a fact not lost on event organizers.

"Michelle has been invited," tournament director Clair Peterson told Golf World on Monday. "The only person I have spoken with [on this matter] is B.J. Wie, and he has not said what David has said."

Wie has indicated that she may make a commitment to the Deere within the next two weeks.

"The community views Michelle as one of its own, and I think that will be a big part of her decision," Peterson said, painting a rosy picture for his event. Wie donated $25,000 to make the home of local resident Travis Hearn handicap-accessible. He was paralyzed in a high school football game.

Wie's next scheduled event is the LPGA's Ginn Tribute May 31-June 3. Wie did not file an entry for the upcoming men's U.S. Open.

Leadbetter has called Wie the "greatest talent I've ever seen at [17], boy or girl," adding, "she would win eight or nine times a year. She has the potential to be that good, so why not [join the LPGA], if you want to fulfill your potential?"
