Huixquilucan, Mexico (AHN) - Maybe the 2006 LPGA season wasn't exactly what Annika Sorenstam would have liked for it to be.
She won three times, including the U.S. Open, and finished third on the money list.
Not too shabby, right?
Well, not for Sorenstam, who has dominated women's golf for the past decade.
She missed two cuts, an anomaly in and of itself since she hadn't missed one for four straight years. She was also beaten out for the Player of the Year award by Lorena Ochoa, an award Sorenstam won five straight times from 2001-05.
Annika Sorenstam has been waiting patiently to make her LPGA season debut this year, and this week, the time has come.
Sorenstam has won both titles of the Mastercard Classic Honoring Alejo Peralta on the LPGA tour in the events two-year existence, so it's a logical choice for her to start her season on a course where she has experienced past success.
Of course, for the best women's golfer in the world, it's difficult to find a course where Sorenstam hasn't excelled.
But she seems to feel right at home on the Bosque Real Country Club and will be looking to win for the 70th time on the LPGA tour.
The course is the longest on tour (6,932 yards) and sits at over 8,000 feet above sea level, offering unique challenges to the best female players in the world.
Sorenstam will face some stern competition from Mexican native and reigning LPGA player of the year Lorena Ochoa, as well as Paula Creamer and Stacy Prammanasudh, who captured the first two titles on tour this season.
But history bodes well for Sorenstam.
She has won the past three years at the first tournament on her schedule, and all the ingredients seem to be shaping up nicely for her to continue that streak.
The 54-hole event is set to tee off Friday. The winner will take home a $1.2 million purse.
