Rancho Mirage, CA (AHN) - Lorena Ochoa and Paula Creamer are headed into the weekend at the LPGA's first major feeling pretty good about their chances.
They should also be able to rest easier over the weekend because Annika Sorenstam is out of the picture after she's tied for 51st with a 4-over par.
Despite a double-bogey on Friday Ochoa shot a 1-under 71 in the second round fo the Kraft Nabisco Championship to take a lead with her to the club house.
However, Creamer would draw even as she had a run of four birdies during a range of six-holes and ended the day with a 5-under 67. Creamer's second round left her tied with Ochoa, and just one shot ahead of Shi Hyun Ahn and Suzann Pettersen. After two rounds Ochoa and Creamer were both at four-under 140 overall.
Sorenstam is 11 shots off the lead after a dreadful 4-over 76 on the tournaments second day.
"There's a lot of golf left," Creamer cautioned.
Sorenstem, who has won the Kraft Nabisco championship on three occasions, will have to be at her best through the next two rounds if she wants to rally and earn her fourth win at Mission Hills.
Sorenstam had her one of her worst rounds ever at the Kraft Nabisco event, as she had five bogeys and just one birdie and brought her score to 7-over 151
"I really don't know what to do," she said.
After winning the U.S. Open in 2006, Sorenstam hasn't been on top of her game. She's most remember for missing cuts at both the ADT Championship and the Women's British Open last year.
This year in her first outing she was beaten at the MasterCard Classic by Meaghan Francella.
"It's just not happening, and obviously I'm disappointed," Sorenstam said Friday. "There's not much more I can do. I'm trying really hard on every shot."
As a result of her bad play inconsistent player she is in jeopardy of losing her No.1 ranking.
If Ochoa would come away victorious this weekend, she would likely take over the No.1 ranking in the world, as she has has won seven titles in the last 11 months.
"Believe me, it's just something that I'm not in a hurry (to accomplish)," Ochoa said Friday. "I've been waiting for five years. Maybe two weeks, three weeks, four weeks more is not a problem."
If she takes the Kraft Nabisco event this would be Ocha's first major.
Ahn, who held the lead after the opening round, fell back Friday after making two bogeys and a double-bogey during one dodgy five-hole stretch. She finished with a 1-over 73 and is 3-under 141 for the tournament which is good for a second place tie with Patterson who had a 69.
Se Ri Pak, who is seeking a victory to complete a career Grand Slam, finished with a 70 and is in fifth place on the leader board with a 2-under 142.
Seventy-four players made the cut at 9-over 153 and some of the names not making the weekend were Natalie Gulbis and Birdie Kim.
