Superstition Mountain, AZ (AHN) - Last year's Player of the Year is back to her old tricks in 2007. Lorena Ochoa picked up her first win on the LPGA Tour on Sunday by holding on for a two-stroke win at the Safeway International.
Ochoa entered Sunday with a four-shot advantage, but then watched it disappear as Suzann Pettersen surged into a tie with 2006's top female golfer.
However, Ochoa was able to recover thanks to her four birdies during the final five holes. She finished with a 4-under 68 on Sunday and completed the tournament at 18-under.
Pettersen finished Sunday at 6-under 66 while falling two shots short of the victory at 16-under.
Ochoa won for the 10th time on tour and earned $225,000.
The Mexican star's collapse had an eerily familiar feeling as back in 2005 she watched a four-shot lead disappear before eventually falling to Annika Sorenstam in a playoff.
"It is hard to tell you right now, but in 2005 it was a really tough day for me," said Ochoa. "It hurt me, and especially being here in Arizona, a special place for me. It was just a hard one."
It nearly happened again as Pettersen erased her four-stroke lead in five holes. She birdied the second through fifth holes and gained an advantage when Ochoa botched a four-foot gimme putt.
Ochoa tied it back up with a birdie on the par-4 15th hole and then took the lead for good on 17 with a par.
"She's maybe the best in the world right now," said Pettersen, who made $137,649 for her career-best finish. "She's just a very great player, and I think she raises the bar for all of us to chase her."
Laura Diaz and Jeong Jang finished at 10-under to tie for third place. Sophie Gustafson and Catriona Matthew rounded out the top five at 9-under.
Annika Sorenstam finished in a three-way tie at 7-under and Paula Creamer was a shot in back of her at 6-under.
The Tour will now move to Rancho Mirage, California for the first major of the season at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Ochoa will try to avenge another disappointing finish from last year when she lost in a playoff to Karrie Webb.
