Ochoa Takes Four Stroke Lead Into Final Round of Safeway International

Superstition Mountain, AZ (AHN) - Lorena Ochoa shot a 3-under 69 on Saturday to take a commanding four stroke lead into the final round of the Safeway International. Her 14-under total after three rounds topped Suzann Petterson and Jeong Jang who were tied for second at 10-under.

Ochoa's solid round on Saturday put her in perfect position to win her first tournament of the year after winning six tournaments last season and being named the LPGA's Player of the Year.

The Mexican born golfer ended Annika Sorenstam's previous hold on that title as the Swede won the honor the previous five years in a row.

Sorenstam also shot a 69 on Saturday but her three day total of 210 was eight strokes off the lead.

Petterson's up and down round of 69 featured an impressive eight birdies but also a disappointing five bogeys. Still, she found herself one of the few golfers who could threaten Ochoa for the tournament win.

The other woman who could possibly pull out an upset would be Jang. She birdied the final two holes in her round on Saturday to tie her with Petterson.

Both golfers will have their work cut out for them because Ochoa is driven to win here in Arizona. She went to school at the University of Arizona and the state is close to her home country of Mexico.

"I want to get this trophy not for me but for the grounds crew and for the Mexicans that are out here watching me play," she said.
