Creamer Wins Opening LPGA Event

Kahuku, Hawaii (AHN) - Paula Creamer started out her golfing season in fine fashion as she won the LPGA's first event, the SBS Open, on Saturday. She finished with a round of 70 to end the 54-hole tournament at 9-under, one stroke better than Julieta Granada.

Creamer's final round was impressive because of bad weather conditions. Rain and wind gave players fits all day long. She had to fight for the victory though.

Granada hit a birdie on the final hole to tie Creamer at 8-under. Playing a group behind, the 20-year-old showed her mettle by making a long 40-foot birdie putt on the 17th green to regain the lead.

Creamer got her par on the final hole by two-putting on the tricky 18th green.

Those final two holes overshadowed the trouble Creamer had a couple of holes earlier. She double-bogeyed the 11th and missed a short par putt on the 13th hole.

"It was a roller coaster round," she said after her win. "I can't explain it. I was so up and down out there."

Karrie Webb finished in third place, three strokes back of Creamer. Her round of 70 on Saturday left her 6-under for the tournament.

Three other golfers tied for fourth at 5-under including last year's LPGA Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa and 18-year old Morgan Pressel.

Pressel was attempting to become the youngest golfer in LPGA history to win a 54-hole event but she struggled all day and her round of 74 left her a non-factor for much of the day.
