Kahuku, HA (AHN) - After a forgettable year in 2006, Paula Creamer stormed ahead in the first LPGA event of the season with a 5-under par 67 to share the lead after the first round of the SBS Open on Thursday.
LPGA rookie Paige Mackenzie and Sherri Steinhauer joined Creamer atop the leader board on the Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort.
Creamer, the 2005 LPGA Rookie of the Year, failed to win last year on tour despite 14 top-ten finishes, including a second place tie in the LPGA Tournament of Champions.
Natalie Gulbis, who has yet to win on tour amid much fanfare, was among a group of four players one-shot back after shooting a 4-under par 68.
Juli Inkster and Morgan Pressell led a pack of players who shot 3-under 69's.
"I worked really hard this offseason. I want to win," Creamer said after her round. "I looked back at my year and compared it to 2005 and noticed certain things and I just worked really hard on the weaknesses."
Mackenzie was even par on her front nine, but birdied five holes on the back for her 67.
Steinhauer, who won last year's British Open, made an eagle on the par-4 14th when she holed her approach shot, also rolled in a 20-footer for birdie on the 18th hole to help her finish with 67.
"It was a very steady first round. I'm happy with the start," she told AP.
Karrie Webb, the hottest player in the field after having won the past two weeks in her native Australia, shot a 2-under 70.
Reigning LPGA Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa finished with a 1-under 71.
