Palermo, Sicily (AHN) - Agnes Szavay won her first ever singles title as she routed Martina Mueller 6-0, 6-1 in the finals of the Palermo International on Sunday.

The eighth seeded Hungarian teenager destroyed the second seeded German with a dominating performance from the baseline.

Mueller's poor performance could most be attributed to two grueling three set matches she had at the red courts of the Country Time club this week.

She beat Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Karin Knapp 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the semifinals.

The disappointing loss in the finals left Mueller with no tournament wins so far this season.

Szavay's victory is the latest in a strong run of tennis play for the 18-year-old. On the strength of appearances in two semifinal appearances in the last two years, she has moved up to No. 53 in the world rankings after not having been in the top 200.

She probably will move up even higher in the rankings with her win and hopes she will not have to qualify for too many more tennis events as a result.

The Hungarian needed to win three qualifying matches to play in this year's French Open and Wimbledon. She did accomplish just that and she even advanced to the second round of play in both majors.
