Knoxville, TN (AHN) - The Tennessee Volunteers had a monumental Sunday afternoon at home against the top team in the nation.

In a match-up of No. 1 vs. No. 2, the Vols swept both games of a doubleheader against the top-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide, 9-2, 4-0.

The win enabled the Vols to win their first regular season Southeastern Conference title and made them the top seed in next week's SEC tournament.

In the opening win over the Tide, senior starting pitcher Monica Abbott set a historical mark herself.

Abbott passed legendary Olympic champion and former Texas stand-out, Cat Osterman, to set the NCAA career strikeout record. With her first strikeout, Abbott passed Osterman. She finished the day with six whiffs, giving her 2,271 for her career.

Osterman was on hand, working the game as a broadcaster for ESPN.

Abbott set the NCAA record for wins earlier in the year when she grabbed her 152nd in March. With her 40th win on Sunday, she now has 179 for her career.

Tennessee (53-4) got plenty of run support during both games, but didn't need much because of their excellent pitching performances. Tonya Callahan led the offensive charge, collecting six total hits and six total RBIs in the doubleheader. She also launched her 10th homer of the year. Liane Horiuchi and India Chiles each went 4-for-6 for the Vols as well.

Alabama fell to 50-6 and will surely drop at least one spot in the rankings.
