Los Alamitos, CA (AHN) - Courtney Mathewson scored three goals to lead the UCLA women's water polo team to its fifth NCAA championship and the 100th athletic championship in school history. The Bruins have won three straight titles in the seven-year history of NCAA women's water polo national competition.
"To be the first school to win 100 NCAA team championships is a great tribute to all of the outstanding student-athletes, coaches and support staff who call UCLA home," athletic director Dan Guerrero told the Daily News. "UCLA has a rich athletic history and it is important to remember and celebrate those who built the foundation and earned the early championships, as well as those who have contributed to the recent successes."
The Bruins held on for a 5-4 victory over top-seeded Stanford thanks to goalkeeper Emily Feher's nine saves. Stanford made a huge fourth quarter run after the Lady Bruins went up 4-1 after three periods, but couldn't complete their comeback.
"I don't think we ever mentioned No. 100 in our group and I think that's part of the reason why we are successful," Feher said. "Now that we can think about it, it's pretty sweet. One hundred is just a number, but it's a pretty nice number.
Lauren Silver scored two of her three goals in the final period for Stanford to bring the Cardinals within one goal at 4-3 before Mathewson scored the game-clinching goal with 6:24 left.
Kira Hillman added Stanford's final goal with 5:38 left, but the Bruins clamped down defensively to finish off the match.
