Boston College Hockey Coach Resigns Amid Allegations Of Improper Conduct

Boston, MA (AHN) - Another new week in the NCAA brought more disturbing news from the collegiate coaching ranks.

Though the school gave no details, reports have surfaced that Boston College women's hockey coach Tom Mutch has resigned Tuesday after an internal investigation was reportedly launched by the University into allegations of inappropriate conduct by the head coach.

"An allegation of inappropriate conduct has been raised involving the coach," Boston College Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The university takes any such matters very seriously. As a result, the athletics department began an investigation of the alleged incident as soon as it was brought to our attention. Coach Mutch subsequently submitted his resignation, and his resignation was accepted."

University officials have refused to elaborate or give any further comment on the issue besides the given statements.

Though school spokesmen have tried to put a spin on the touchy issue, they have already issued conflicting reports.

Prior to their most recent statements, school officials issued another statement on the athletic Web site earlier on Tuesday that made no reference to any allegations, choosing to word Mutch's resignation as a result of his desire to "to pursue other career interests."

The earlier statement also praised Mutch for leading the Eagles to their first Frozen Four this year.

Mutch was also named Hockey East coach of the year.

The school's Web site as a statement which reads:

"Tom Mutch brought our women's ice hockey program to a new level and built a strong foundation for the future," Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo says. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Mutch spent four seasons at the school and helped the team to improve its record each season.

BC went 24-10-2 in 2006-07 and reached the semifinals of the NCAA tournament before falling to Minnesota Duluth 4-3 in double overtime.

Mutch also played hockey at Northeastern from 1986-88 before becoming assistant coach of the U.S. women's national team in 1996, a position he held when that won the gold medal at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

In 2002, Mutch was an assistant coach on the Northeastern men's team.
