Are, Sweden (AHN) - American skier Lindsey Kildow injured her right knee in training and ended up missing the final two events of the Alpine World Championships.
"I straddled a gate and caught the gate with my (ski) tip and hyperextended my knee," Kildow said Friday. "I have a partially torn ACL. It's only a Grade I, so it's not season-ending, but right now I'm not racing until it heals."
At least Kildow will return to the U.S. with medals in hand as she won two silver medals this time around.
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, Kildow fell during downhill training and was hospitalized overnight. She did come back to compete in all four of her scheduled events, but intense pain limited her performance and her best finish was seventh in the super-G.
With the injury, Kildow missed Friday's slalom and also sat out the final team event which concluded the championships on Sunday. Kildow added that she will also miss the first World Cup races in Sierra Nevada, Spain on Feb. 24-25, but is aiming to return on Mar. 2-4 for the events in Tarvisio, Italy.
"I'm planning a goal for myself to try and be back for Tarvisio, but it really depends on how good I feel and how my knee feels," Kildow said.
At the Alpine World Championships, Kildow competed in three events and finished second to Anja Paerson twice, in both, the super-G and downhill. Kildow also came in second after the downhill portion of the combined, but was disqualified after a wild slalom run.
"I'm really happy. Especially the downhill was really positive to get second place, even with my big mistake," Kildow said. "I know I can be world champion if I have a clean run, so that was good."
Kildow, one of the best all-around skiers on the circuit, excels in all four disciplines and rarely skips a race.
"Mentally, it's really hard to keep going, to be strong every weekend," she said. "I think this has been my best year as far as mental preparation and coming into the world championships. It was really positive and I had great races before and during world champs."
Kildow won the final World Cup race before the World Championships, finally mastering the course in San Sicario, Italy -- where she fell during the Olympics.
Depending on how many races Kildow misses, she could possibly lose her chance to win several World Cup titles.
Kildow is currently in second place in the super-G standings, only 130 points behind Renate Goetschl, with two races remaining in the discipline this season.
There are also two downhills left and Kildow is third behind Goetschl and Mancuso. In the overall standings, Kildow is currently fifth, 193 points behind Goetschl.
"If I can't ski the rest of the season, I'm not extremely disappointed, but I felt like I still had a chance at the overall, so that's always disappointing, and also the super-G title," she said. "I'm only 22 and this is my first real injury. So I'm trying to stay positive and look to the future."
