Carson, CA (AHN) - Fresh off its win at the Four Nations Cup tournament in China, the United States National Team will return to training camp Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming Algarve Cup which will take place next month in Portugal.
Head coach Greg Ryan will bring 27 players into the camp, but will need to make some tough choices to pair the pool down to 20 before they leave to compete in Portugal.
The Algarve Cup has become one the most competitive women's soccer events outside of the World Cup and Olympics, and the national team will square off with a familiar opponent in the first round.
China, whom the Americans defeated 2-0 to win the Four Nation's Cup, will be the opening round foe on Mar. 7. They will also face Finland and Sweden in the round-robin format, then advance to tournament play based on the finish within their group in the 12-team field.
The U.S. has won four of the past seven Algarve Cups, including three straight from 2003-2005. They lost to Germany on penalty kicks in last year's final.
Five players will return to the mix after sitting out the Four Nations Cup to rest or because of injuries.
Kristine Lilly and Abby Wambach, two cornerstones on the team, as well as Aly Wagner and Christie Rampone will be back. Shannon Boxx will be making her first appearance on the field since undergoing major knee surgery last summer.
The U.S. boasts an overall record of 27-9-7 in the Algarve Cup.
