Are, Sweden (AHN) - Anje Paerson accomplished something on Sunday no other skier has ever done. The Swede won the downhill race at the world championships to become the first person to win gold medals in all five skiing disciplines. She previously won the super-G and combined titles earlier this week and she won the slalom and giant slalom back in 2001.
Sunday's win in her home country caps off a stunning week for Paerson. She did not win a race this season before the world championships as he struggled to recuperate from knee surgery. Now, she has won three events.
Her winning time in the downhill was 1 minute, 26.89 seconds, just ahead of Lindsey Kildow of the United States and Nicole Hosp of Austria.
The historic victory left Paerson ecstatic.
"It was a dream for me to come here and win the downhill after last year," she told AP. "It's too good to be true. It was important for me to see the No. 1 next to my name on the scoreboard."
Paerson's accomplishment makes her one of the best skiers ever.
She has won at every level. Paerson picked up nine medals in the world championships in her career so far, seven of them gold. She also won five medals in her Olympic career. Last year, she received her first gold with a win in the slalom.
Some of her biggest successes have occurred in the World Cup races. She has won a total of 34 times, with the most victories (18) in the slalom event. She won the overall World Cup twice, once in 2004 and the other the following year.
Paerson hopes to keep on winning. This year's world championships for the slalom events are scheduled for next week.
Can she win those and make a perfect sweep?
"You never know what might happen," she said.
