West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - Phoenix Mercury head coach, Paul Westhead, one of the most innovative and ingenious basketball coaches on the planet, may leave his new championship team to become an assistant coach with the Seattle Supersonics of the NBA.

"I'm going to go home and think it out," Westhead said Sunday, according to the Arizona Republic.

Westhead is the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls and Denver Nuggets and is a nearly lifelong friend of new Sonics head coach P.J. Carlesimo.

Westhead said the franchise contacted him a few weeks ago about the position, adding that he has spoken with Mercury management as well as his players.

With Sunday's championship win, Westhead became the only coach in U.S. basketball history to lead a NBA and WNBA team to championship titles.

Westhead led the Lakers to the 1980 NBA title with the Lakers.
