New York, NY (CNS) - Rutgers University basketball player Kia Vaughn has dropped the defamation lawsuit filed in a New York court, against radio personality Don Imus, CBS Radio and television partners, after the "nappy-headed ho" controversy.
Vaughn had sued Imus and others less than a month ago claiming his comments damaged her reputation.
Marti McKenzie, a spokeswoman for Vaughn's attorney, Richard Ancowitz, said that the player opted not to go through with the lawsuit because she wants to focus her attention on her studies and game.
"Last week Kia Vaughn returned to Rutgers University to focus upon both her academic pursuits as a journalism major and upon her basketball team. Her strong commitments to both have influenced her decision to withdraw the lawsuit at this time," she said.
A lawyer for Imus, Martin Garbus, said that his client had paid no money to Vaughn.
Vaughn filed a defamation lawsuit against the opinionated talk show host on Aug 14, the same day it was announced he had negotiated a multi-million dollar settlement with CBS Radio for breach-of-contract.
Imus's description of Vaughn's team as "nappy-headed hos," during the broadcast of his "Imus in the Morning" show on WFAN radio show last April, sparked nationwide controversy. Imus apologized for his remarks at multiple occasions; however, he was still fired from his job.
