West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - As the postseason draws nearer in the WNBA, the games are getting tighter. Of the six match-ups on Tuesday night, five were decided by six points or less.
Although the Minnesota Lynx rolled over the Seattle Storm in a 21-point win, Washington, Sacramento, Indiana, New York and Phoenix all earned hard-fought victories in close contests.
Phoenix Mercury 96, Los Angeles Sparks 93
Penny Taylor scored 23 points and drilled a pair of clutch free throws with 11 seconds left to help the Mercury rise to the top spot in the Western Conference by a game over San Antonio, which fell to Washington.
Diana Taurasi added 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Mercury (19-11).
Kiesha Brown scored a career-high 18 points for the Sparks (9-19), who dropped their fourth game in five outings. Taj McWilliams-Franklin contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, and Sherill Baker hit double-figures with 14 points.
Washington Mystics 77, San Antonio Silver Stars 73
Alana Beard scored 19 points and Nakia Sanford added 18 points for Washington (13-15), which won its third straight game to stay 1 1/2 games ahead for the final playoff spot in the East.
Sophia Young poured in 26 points for the Silver Stars (17-11), who dropped a game behind the Phoenix Mercury for the Western Conference lead.
Minnesota Lynx 95, Seattle Storm 74
Seimone Augustus scored 21 points to lead the Lynx over the undermanned Storm, who were missing Lauren Jackson and Janell Burse.
Svetlana Abrosimova netted 16 points in the third quarter, helping Minnesota take a franchise-record 37 point lead.
Betty Lennox led Seattle with 16 points, though Jackson was in Australia tending to an ill family member and Burse is out with damaged ligaments in her left wrist.
Sacramento Monarchs 81, Connecticut Sun 79
Kara Lawson ripped the nets for 21 points to help Sacramento wrap up a playoff spot with a hard-fought win over the Sun.
Adrian Williams had 14 points for Sacramento (17-11) and Yolanda Griffith added 11.
Lindsay Whalen and Asjha Jones had 17 points each to lead the Sun (16-13).
Sun's player Katie Douglas' husband, Vasilis Giapalakis, was escorted from the arena after yelling at officials.
Indiana Fever 75, Chicago Sky 70 2OT
It took two overtimes, but the Fever finally outlasted the Sky thanks to a well-balanced effort led by Anna DeForge's 16 points and nine rebounds.
Tamika Whitmore scored 15, Tully Bevilaqua had 13 points and Tan White chipped in with 11 points for the Fever (19-11), winners of three of their last four games.
Chasity Melvin rolled up a season-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, Dominique Canty had 11 points, and Stacey Dales and Armintie Price each pumped in 10 points for the Sky (12-18).
New York Liberty 77, Houston Comets 71
Loree Moore and Janel McCarville each scored 17 points as the Liberty (12-16) won their first road game in over a month and kept their playoff hopes alive with a win.
Tina Thompson scored a game-high 24 points and Hamchetou Maiga-Ba added 16 for the Comets (10-19), who hurt their already slim chances for a playoff spot.
