West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - Close games and hard-fought victories ruled Wednesday night's play in the WNBA, as Detroit, Indiana and Washington all won games by single-digits.
Detroit Shock (15-5) 87, New York Liberty (10-10) 82 (OT)
Deanna Nolan poured in 21 points and Cheryl Ford recorded a monster double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Shock to a hard-fought home court win over the Liberty. Detroit scored the first six points of the extra session, getting a three-point play from Katie Smith, a basket from Nolan and a free-throw by Ford.
Swin Cash matched Ford with 19 points for the Shock, who had three starters log at least 42 minutes. Janel McCarville led New York with 17 points, but missed a shot late in regulation that could have won it for the Liberty.
Indiana Fever (16-4) 75, Chicago Sky (8-13) 74
The Fever have shown their grit in winning close games lately and Wednesday night was no different as they held off the Shock for their third win in five games decided by a point or two and have won six in a row overall. Tamika Catchings had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Tammy Sutton-Brown chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds for the Eastern Conference leaders.
Jia Perkins scored 24 points and Candice Dupree contributed 12 points for the Sky, who dropped their fifth straight contest.
Washington Mystics (8-12) 65, Houston Comets (6-15) 58
Alana Beard pumped in 12 of her 16 points in the second half to help the Mystics overcome a 14-point deficit at the break to win. Monique Currie had 16 points and 11 rebounds and DeLisha Milton-Jones also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.
Tina Thompson paced Houston with a solid effort in scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
