The rookie center was failed while making a two-point bucket and gave the Liberty a one-point advantage at the free-throw line with 6.9 seconds to go.
"I didn't know what to do with myself. I kind of stood there for a second and everybody started jumping around," said Davenport. "We've been working on free throws a lot lately. This feels good to go out there and knock it down for the game-winner."
Cappie Pondexter made a tiebreaking layup for Phoenix with 10.3 seconds left before Davenport came through with the game-winning play. Pondexter
Loree Moore scored a career-high 22 points and Davenport added 15 for the undefeated Liberty (4-0). Erin Thorn scored 11 points, and Cathrine Kraayeveld had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Pondexter paced the Mercury with 20 points while Diana Taurasi had 16 points, and Penny Taylor added 15 for Phoenix (4-3).
"You can't dwell on a loss," Taurasi said. "We have tremendous confidence in whoever has the ball at the end of the game. It ended up in Cappie's hands and she took a good shot. It just didn't go in."
The Liberty, who are off to their best start since opening the WNBA's inaugural 1997 season 7-0, traded for Davenport from San Antonio in exchange for three-time All-Star Becky Hammon.
"When we came in for training camp, everybody was in great shape and we meshed together really fast," Kraayeveld said. "I think that's showing on the court."
