West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - Several terrific offensive performances highlighted WNBA play on Sunday, including outstanding games by Lauren Jackson (35 points) and Penny Taylor (30 points) who led Seattle and Phoenix, respectively, to victories. Tamika Catchings was pretty good herself, dropping in 18 points for Indiana in its win.
Seattle Storm 83, Los Angeles Sparks 71
Lauren Jackson tied a career-high with her 35-point outburst and also grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Seattle to victory over the Sparks. Jackson had her jumper working, hitting on 14-of-22 field goal attempts, including two of three from 3-point range.
Betty Lennox added 12 points and a strong complete game with nine rebounds and six assists for the Storm (6-6), who halted a two-game losing streak. Janell Burse also had 12 points.
Sherill Baker and Sidney Spencer each scored 15 points for the Sparks (6-6), losers of four of their last five games. Baker also had eight assists for L.A..
Phoenix Mercury 90, Houston Comets 85
Phoenix managed to overcome the lack of two players, injured Cappie Pondexter and suspended Diana Taurasi, to topple the Comets. Penny Taylor was a big reason why, scoring 13 of her 30 points in the final quarter of the high-scoring contest.
Belinda Snell also helped pick up the scoring slack for Phoenix, netting 17 points, while Tangela Smith chipped in with 16.
Crystal Smith had 16 of her 18 points in the first half for Houston (2-11), which snapped its first winning streak of the season. Hamchetou Maiga-Ba contributed with 16 points and six rebounds.
Indiana Fever 74, New York Liberty 63
Tamika Catchings had another strong game with 18 points to power Indiana over the reeling Liberty. Tammy Sutton-Brown added 11 points and Anna DeForge had 10 to help Indiana earn their tenth win. They are also just a half game behind Detroit in the Eastern Conference.
Loree Moore scored 17 points, Cathrine Kraayeveld and Janel McCarville added 13, though N.Y. dropped its sixth game in its last eight outings.
