Knoxville, TN (AHN) - Legendary Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt was taken to the hospital on Thursday after she fainted at home because of dehydration.
A spokesman for St. Mary's Hospital would not reveal the 55-year-old's condition but he did confirm Summitt was admitted into the facility.
Lady Vols spokeswoman Debby Jennings did confirm what happened in her comments to AP.
"(Pat) had kind of a dizzy spell and passed out," she said. "She is under observation and I think they are just trying to hydrate her."
Some speculate that Summitt's health was compromised by a hectic schedule this summer. She just finished running a five-day camp and was getting ready to start another this coming weekend.
The lack of air conditioning in the gyms where she has been holding the camps could have had a negative impact on Summitt.
The University of Tennessee coach is probably the most celebrated of all in women's college basketball. She has been at the school since 1974 and has compiled a stunning 947-180 record.
Summitt has led her teams to seven NCAA championships, the most recent coming this past year when the Lady Vols beat Rutgers. She also has been named NCAA Coach of the Year seven times.
