Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Katie Smith was at her best when her team needed it the most on Monday night.
Smith poured in seven of her team-high 18 points in the final 2:22 and added seven rebounds to lead the Detroit Shock to a 79-73 win over the Los Angles Sparks in a WNBA showdown.
Smith had plenty of help from her teammates, as Deanna Nolan added 15 points and Kara Braxton chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds for the Shock, who improved to 8-1.
LaToya Thomas had a season-high 19 points for the Sparks, who fell to 5-4. Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 17 points and hauled in 11 rebounds and Mwadi Mabika contributed 16 points.
Smith was clutch down the stretch, drilling a 3-pointer with 2:22 left and followed by two free throws about 40 seconds later to put the Shock ahead 73-70.
The Shock then held off the Sparks by connecting on six straight free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
