Oklahoma City, OK (AHN) - Thursday's first day of the 2007 College Softball World Series proved to be tough for hitters. The three winning teams allowed just two hits between them. Tennessee, Washington and Northwestern hurlers all threw no-hitters while Arizona was carried to victory by way of a walk-off home run in the ninth.
Before Thursday no pitcher had thrown a no-hitter in the World Series in four years.
Tennessee 2, Texas A and M 0
No-hitters in baseball are pretty rare. For Tennessee softball ace hurler Monica Abbott, the feat is a common occurrence.
Abbott was unhittable for the 23rd time of her career as the Lady Vols claimed a 2-0 victory over Texas A and M in a first-round Women's College Softball World Series Thursday night.
Abbott, who became the NCAA's career strikeout queen just a few weeks back, fanned 16 en route to the victory in the double-elimination tournament. Abbott (47-3), who was honored Tuesday night as the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year, now has 665 career strikeouts.
India Chiles and Shannon Doepking supplied RBI singles for the Lady Vols.
Amanda Scarborough (26-9) suffered the loss for the Aggies.
In other WCSWS first-round action:
Washington 3, DePaul 1
Washington's Danielle Lawrie pitched the first World Series no-hitter in four years, only hours before Abbott did the same.
Lawrie struck out nine, but gave up a run on an error in the first inning. Lawrie is the first pitcher to toss a no-hitter while allowing a run in a World Series game.
Washington's Dena Tyson belted a two-run homer in the third inning off DePaul's Tracie Adix (21-3). Ashlyn Watson went yard in the fourth inning.
Northwestern 2, Arizona State 0
Eileen Canney (32-9) threw a one-hitter to lead Northwestern, accounting for one of the three no-hitters in the first day of the World Series.
Tammy Williams homered and Katie Logan had an RBI double in the third inning.
Canney avoided trouble against Kaitlin Cochran, who leads the nation with a .495 batting average. Canney walked Cochran all three times she faced her.
Canney, who won her 96th game, is one victory shy of the school's career record set by Lisa Ishikawa from 1984-87.
Arizona 2, Baylor 1
Kristie Fox hit a walkoff home run in the ninth inning, sending Arizona to the second round in grand style.
Fox reached high and outside the plate, smashing a riser that traveled just beyond the left-field fence. It was her 15th home run of the season and her 11th game-winning.
Taryne Mowatt (37-10) struck out 15 and allowed just two hits. Lisa Ferguson (25-8) was impressive in the loss for Baylor.
Here is Friday's schedule of World Series games:
No. 6 Washington vs. No. 2 Northwestern
No. 5 Tennessee vs. No. 1 Arizona
